AI-generated content is becoming more common, blurring the line between human and machine-made work. From classrooms to newsrooms, AI has infiltrated every corner of our world. In fact, 40% of global companies now use AI, with an additional 42% exploring its implementation in their operations.

With my background in digital products and bid management, I have seen firsthand how AI writing is transforming content creation across businesses and industries.  While it undeniably boosts productivity, it also raises a critical question: How do we ensure content authenticity and maintain ethical standards? This is where AI detector tools come in.

Recent studies show that AI-generated text can be hard to distinguish from human writing. AI models like GPT-4 and Claude are now creating highly convincing text, so we need reliable AI content detection tools. You can even give one of these tools a tone or prompts to write more human content and it does. In this article, I tested six of the best free AI detectors using the test case below.

The Real Life Test Case for AI Detectors

To test how well AI detectors can differentiate between human-written and AI-generated content, I created a mixed text sample. The first three paragraphs were written by me, detailing my experiences with proposal generation at a company. The second part—a list of 10 ways AI is transforming proposal generation—was generated entirely by ChatGPT.

I combined both sections into a flowing text to closely simulate real-world usage, where AI often supplements human content. Below are the results from various free AI detection tools.


1. ZeroGPT – Best of the Free AI Content Detection Tools

  • Classification: Your Text is Likely Human written, may include parts generated by AI/GPT.
  • Human Probability: 72.6%
  • AI Probability: 27.4%
  • Highlighted Text: ZeroGPT highlighted content it classified as AI.
  • Character Limit: 15,000 characters for free which is more than most free tools.

ZeroGPT accurately identified the human-written text but struggled with the AI portions. It incorrectly classified some AI-generated content as human, leading to mixed results. Content authenticity is critical, and as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, tools like ZeroGPT are essential for maintaining trust in written content.

2. GPTZero – Most Confident AI Detector

  • Classification: Highly confident this text is entirely AI-generated.
  • Human Probability: 0%
  • AI Probability: 100%
  • Highlighted Text: GPTZero flagged specific sentences  that were human as AI, so it has mixed results in human content. However, it accurately identified all the AI content.
  • Character Limit: 5,000 characters for free input.

GPTZero was accurate in identifying the AI-generated portions but surprisingly classified nearly three paragraphs of my human-written text as AI-generated, which could lead to confusion if human content is misclassified.

3. Hive Moderation – Best for Segment Analysis

  • Classification: The input is likely to contain AI-generated text.
  • AI Probability: 99.9%
  • Segment Analysis: Hive flagged multiple segments throughout the text as AI-generated.
  • Character Limit: Hive requires a minimum of 750 characters and recommends a text length of 1,500 characters for optimal results.

Hive Moderation’s detection classified almost all of the text as AI-generated, even though much of it was written by a human. This suggests that Hive may struggle with identifying subtle differences between human and AI-generated content, potentially leading to misclassifications in mixed texts.

4. QuillBot – AI Detector with High Probability

  • Classification: 83% of the text is likely AI-generated
  • Human Probability: 17%
  • AI Probability: 83%
  • Character Limit: 1,200 words

QuillBot indicated that 83% of the text was AI-generated, and only 17% was human-written. However, it didn’t identify any parts as AI-refined or human-refined, making it harder to detect subtle differences in the content.

5. Winston AI – Most Cautious Detector

  • Classification: Winston detected the text as 0% human, highly probable that AI was used.
  • Human Score: 0%
  • AI Probability: 100%

Winston flagged the first three paragraphs as AI-generated, even though they were human-written. This suggests potential limitations in distinguishing complex human content from AI.

6. Just Done – Best Multi-Engine AI Content Detector

Used same text and this is the result with Justdone:

Classification: Your text is likely human-written but may include some AI-generated parts.
Human Probability: 65%
AI Probability: 35%
Highlighted Text: Justdone flagged parts it thought were AI-generated while correctly identifying most human-written sections.
Character Limit: 10,000 characters for free input, slightly less than ZeroGPT’s 15,000.

Justdone is unique because it combines several detection tools, including Originality.ai, Scribbr, GPTZero, and Copyleaks, to give a more accurate analysis. Compared to ZeroGPT, it was 10% better at spotting AI content, though it rated human-written text slightly lower, showing it takes a more cautious approach.

The free tier works well for most needs, but the 10,000-character limit might feel small for longer documents. Still, the use of multiple tools ensures a thorough check, making JustDone a great option for spotting AI content and keeping your writing trustworthy.

Recommendation

  • For quick free scans: ZeroGPT, Justdone, GPTZero, and Hive Moderation are solid choices. I personally like using ZeroGPT as it allows you to enter a large number of characters and you can use it countless times without issues.
  • For detailed analysis and bulk projects: Consider premium tools like Originality.AI or Grammarly plagiarism checkers which are well-regarded for content authenticity but not included in this test as they are paid tools.

As AI content becomes more prevalent, using multiple AI detection tools together like ZeroGPT and GPTZero can help ensure more accurate results for content authenticity.
